My Purple Heart

I'm not the first marine to freeze
with my purple heart between my knees
it's post-traumatic stress disease
but honey I mean it, I mean to please

I was drinking with an old legionnaire
he had the classic ten-yard stare
he said "it's not the war that does you in
it's the fear of never fighting again"
He asked do I understand
he was only two-thirds of a man
what he brought into battle was gone
he wouldn't know now if his gun was drawn

I'm not the first marine to freeze...

I plant a flag on a foreign beach
I start making the standard speech

when an enemy shifts in the sand
and shoots the pistol out of my hand
she carefully peruses it
and shows me how she uses it
it's soothing on the whole
selling my little soldier's soul

I'm not the first marine to freeze...

There's a monster under the hood
I've gone awol for good
my traitor's blood has dried
I'm joining the other side

I'm not the first marine to freeze
With my purple heart between my knees
It's post-traumatic stress disease
But honey I mean it, I mean to please
