The Old Joy

The old joys no longer apply
the filmy stars that filled the sky
have faded, gone completely dry
the old plays that seemed so real
are not eternal after all
they're just old habits to fill a hole
that opened in the aftermath
the disappearance of the path
we calculated with perfect math

the old joys no longer apply
perhaps the new ones are standing by
if I were you I wouldn't wait
it's one more thing you'll learn to hate

seasoned veterans have lost their flavor
and the young exhibit the old behavior
around the bend's another savior
no matter what the smart ones say
they're watching, watching everyday
for whatever help is on the way
help is on the way
and our hero's claiming second sight
though he can't see past his nose tonight
his spirit falls like a wounded kite

the old joys no longer apply
perhaps the new ones are standing by
everybody, count to three
put your hope and faith in me

somebody murdered all our fun
but how far can the bastard run
chalk it up to the evil one
there's an omen in the salad plate
with a meaning we can't penetrate
forever in an altered state
only open up your eyes
and another perfect moment dies
it's always such a big surprise

the old joy no longer applies
and the new one's wrapped
in cloudy skies
and there's no one here
to clean up this town
before it all comes down
there's no one here to clean up this town
before it all comes down
